Ahem, I would like to point out, in case the news has not travelled so far, that Scotland (ye bonny etc) carried out the first same-sex marriages on Monday 19 December. "Civil partnerships" is the official term, but effectively it is the same thing as a registry office hetero marriage. They had to call it something different to shut up the God-spotters.

Over 140 couples have signed up to be wed under the new law.
And in a pleasant moment of smugness, (pass me that Havana) I note that England and Wales followed suit yesterday, Tuesday 20th. Better late than never, of course.
Joking aside lot of people in both nations worked long and hard to achieve this and they deserve a big round of applause.
