everyone wanted stone counters,stainless steel frindge and stoves and so on.
now that was most normal people.

I don't keep up with politics, yet I know exactly what's going on. The great and powerful "leader of the free world" is crumbling and everyone is looking to place blame.

I blame everyone and no one.

Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Jr., Obama have ALL fucked up in some way. However, most people choose to blame thoose who don't fit their own personal interests.

FACT: We need to spend money in order to get this economy rolling again!

FACT: It could have been fixed IF the bailouts were given to the taxpaying American people, instead of companies. WE stimulate the economy! Out of the BILLIONS? given in bailouts, anyone who paid taxes could have gotten 5-6 figures. It sounds far fetched for some I'm sure...but look at the nature of the average American. Some would pay off their debts. Most would buy cars, clothes, go on vacations, etc...The economy would, in a manner of speaking...BUST THE BIGGEST NUT IN LIFE!!! Within 24 hours, the economy would begin showing signs of life. The stock market would climb and the job market would follow later on.

Well said, Raven! You know, our economic system is predicated on flawed premises: fundamentally, to be healthy it has to keep growing, but any organism that grows too much exhausts its environment's ability to support it and it collapses. We can't have infinite growth in a finite world.

The quandry was emphasized by Jean Chatsky (sp?) today: she said that so long as the American consumer doesn't spend, the economy will flounder. Spending is good for the economy. But saving is good for the individual. These are fundamentally conflicting notions, which have really come to a head these past few years. As individuals and families, we have to save, invest in the future, conserve our fiscal resources. But as a nation we have to spend to stimulate the economy. And the gov't can't do that for us.

Looked at from the other side of the pond I am puzzled by the intensity of your exchanges; I suggest you Americans 'chill out'..

1) The economy is in trouble, its not in meltdown; it was never going to revive within the first term of the Obama Presidency; and it is still the USA so it will revive because the USA is the biggest and most vibrant economy in the Western Hemisphere.

2) Obama is not a socialist, this curious 'American nightmare' sounds laughable from a UK perspective because we know -or used to know- what socialism was; don't worry so much about it, the socialist argument has been dead since 1989.

3) the USA is still the envy of most other countries, a great place for a holiday (even if the £ is not as strong against the $ as it used to be); and most Americans are still friendly, generous and funny people who make great films once or twice a year. It also has a multi-cultural and accessible and attractive population of tgirls most of whom, I suspect, would not swap the USA for another country.

4) You could do much worse than Obama -elect someone who believes in Alien invasions, who thinks we are living in the 'End Times', someone paranoid about Muslims and Mexicans, who thinks the US is 'full up', etc etc etc.
