Gilgamesh was 16 years, 4 months old when she shuffled off this mortal coil this morning. She had been healthy and happy all her life, but developed kidney cancer a few months ago and gradually faded until it was time to let her go. We lost her sister (also to kidney cancer) last year, so I'm now catless for the first time in 16 years.

I am sorry to hear that. Hugs!
Will you be getting another one or remain cat-less?

sorry to hear you dont have any pussy around anymore.
i am kinda catless too after the indoor one went missing a few years back but the wild outdoor female that come around seems to survive well.
she get feed but kinda more shy now due to many wild animals around now like coyotos and hybrd coyote wolf.
them really scary cause animal expects say they wolf and coyote dont inter breed.
fisher cats are pretty scary too but you dont see them often kinda a blue moon kinda thing.
as for indoor cat well i happy that no more cats indoor but i did have to put the outdoor one in the sun room durning the winter when she was attacked.
she dont like being captured and made to be in a room or treated.
she kinda dont let me get too close anymore cause she think i grab her.
but you know once i do she never fight back she somewhat tame but nothing wild ever really is.
well E mayby you can live furballless now.
i am staying petless here from now on cause i travel far to much.
animals really get pissed off when your gone.

Sorry to hear this, E. :( I've met your cats.
I've lost four of my 'kids' in recent years, not counting the strays that just disappear. It's tough.
You may find yourself catless for a while, as I was about a year ago, but they will come to you. They sense a vacuum and will call out.

Thanks everyone! Your thoughts and well wishes are deeply appreciated. MsD, I doubt that I'll remain cat-less for long: as B1 says, there's a vacuum here now, and I'm sure some cat will come along to fill it. I'm not in any rush to get a new cat, but then again we do need a mouser for the coming winter....
Any cat that we get will remain an indoors kitty. There are fishers and coyotes in our area, and they love having housecat on the menu. Fishers are nasty critters, weighing up to 30 lbs with dangerous claws and teeth--and they can climb better than cats, so the escape route from coyotes won't work with fishers.
Eastern coyotes are nasty, too. Recent genetic studies have shown that eastern coyotes are indeed hybrids of western coyotes (which are smaller) and wolves, and they represent the single most successful large mammal expansion of the past century, with populations growing at a fierce rate as they fill the ecological vacuum left by the estermination of wolves and other large predators throughout the northeast and Canada.

Sorry to hear of your loss. My kitty is getting old herself and I'm not looking forward to when it's time to let go.
