The senate did not approve the renewal of the patriot act although Bush had hoped to make it permanant. I personally think although it infringes on certain civil rights that it should remain in place. Suspected terrorists should have NO rights. They bring it on themselves.
What do you all think??

Well, I agree about terrorists, but the problem is that the Patriot Act allows for the unwarrented abolition of civil rights of ANY person in the country, and as such is a severe violation of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights in particular. So it's not about restricting the rights of terrorists but the potential violation of anyone's rights which is at issue.

In London this summer a Brazilian electrician on his way to work was shot in the head 7 times at point blank range by a plainclothes policeman, who had not identified himself as such, WHILE the victim was being held down by another plainclothes policeman. Why? Because the idiot with the gun suspected he was a terrorist, probably because, being Brazilian, he had a tan.
Jean Charles de Menenez, the victim, was unarmed and had no connection with any terrorist group at all. He was innocent of any crime. He was just a young guy on his way to work. But he was suspected of being a terrorist by a trigger-happy cop, and that was enough to get him executed in cold blood.
Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. That requires due process. Convicted terrorists you can throw the book at. Punish them with the utmost sanction the law allows. You won't find me disagreeing. No ma'am.
But suspected ones must get the full protection of the law, same as you or I would expect, because otherwise the terrorists have won.

this is wrong on soooo many levels. First, the whole premise of our judicial system in the U.S. is "supposed" to be innocent until proven guilty. this stands it on its head, particularly when one can be GTMO'd without the federales having to show cause under claims of "National Security."
second, it fosters an environment where all of us are potentially "suspected" terrorists, simply awaiting someone else to denounce us to HSA. if our politics are not marching in lockstep with this administration's world view, in their minds we "are" potential threats to their belief system.
finally, they are asking us to forego liberty for security. anyone who thinks this is a fair trade can go pee on Patrick Henry's grave....then rent a condo at the newest most up-to-date "gated community" on the drawing boards.....a restyled San Quentin. i hear its very secure.
but don't get me started on this collection of misanthropes we have as leaders.....
The Patriot act is bs, i agree with the terriosts thing but i dont want my rights violated in the process. The act gives them the right to do anything they are already spying on us illegally.
