My only question is are they seriously unaware of what the term Trasnvestite means compared to Transgendered or Transsexual, or are does Brazil actually have that many Transvestites?

There is a distinct difference in these words and I know I am greatly offended when someone decides to call me a transvestite.

A lot of TV shows, even informative ones that aren't attempting to be negative, use the term Transvestite in place of Transgendered or Treanssexual all to often.

I mean, I know everything is just a label and to be upset is probably nto worth it, but it still irks me.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I just read a short review of Transamerica and it referred to the lead character as -- I hate this -- he-she. Yuck.

I personally think the way they made the GG look TG is HIGHLY offensive, check out the trailer if you want to know what I mean grls!

That's a shame, Jordan. I have a lot of respect for Felicity Huffman as an actor and thought that, if they weren't about casting an actual TG in the role that she was a good pick for both her acting chops and her appearance. It would have been better if they just let her look like she normally does (say, on Desperate Housewives) and did not try to "make" her look like a TG. Sigh. But I still think the movie is a big step in the right direction.

I totally agree 100% Ecstatic i take nothing away from the woman's talents, i'm talking about the prosthetics they used to "butch" her up, Maybe i'm overtly sensative but I'm sure they could have done better in the characters appearance

I just watched the trailer. That greasy makeup, big jaw, and big nose they gave her looked awful. They really could've gotten a real transgender girl to play the part. I guess they wanted to have some sort of star power in the movie besides Burt Young.

Interesting. This is reminiscent of the criticism that Memoirs of a Geisha has been garnering regarding casting Chinese and Korean actors as Japanese: yet it's nonetheless a breakout movie for the culture in many ways. Likewise, casting a GG as a TG in Transamerica: it's a breakout movie which (based on what I've read as it hasn't started showing in my area yet) is a far more realistic and less stereotyped view of transgenderism than mainstream America has probably ever seen, yet nevertheless fails in casting a GG as a TG. But I'll reserve judgement until I see it.

The only tg person in the film is reduced to a cameo as a fiddle player (Calpernia Addams) who in real life does play the fiddle she used to do it in pageants in this area (TN KY IN), But nonetheless the idea of the movie is a great one, I just have a problem with the execution of the main character, They could have done without the prosthetics. but oh well just one girls opinion lol

I dont think we should have our own bathrooms cuz it then makes us outsiders. We live as women therefore we should be treated a such.

This reminds me of white water fountains and colored ones, and white schools and colored ones. It's bullshit and it's just another way to seperate us from society which is wrong.

So true! If they had tranny restrooms I wouldnt go in ... I would go to the kunts room ...

I can already see it ... It would be tons of DRAMA in the TS ROOM!

The girls would be fighting and carrying on ... :x

I totally agree with you, Moni and Kiely. What difference does it make what your privates look like? It's the whole person who is male or female, and as such you should feel free to use the women's room. Anything else is absurd.

Jordan, what gets me about the prosthetics is that Felicity as she really appears in life is both beautiful enough yet androgynous enough to be believable in the role without prosthetics. I can't see how they would do anything but detract from the effect.

So far, the best TG treatment I've seen in mainstream TV or movies has been on Nip/Tuck.

when I first saw this thread, I thought wow great, the tgirls should have their own restrooms in public places, that's a way for the society to show some recognition;but then I saw moni's and Kiely's posts I realized that I have to agree with them as they live as women they should be treated as such...
