In 1969 it was illegal in New York State to serve alcohol to "known homosexuals". Police would routinely harass gay spots and arrest patrons. Bar owners were fined and put out of business But on a hot humid June night of that year, in one act of drunken spontaneous defiance, an odd group of queers in a dingy West Village club named Stonewall said enough is enough.

Well maybe it wasn't up there with the heroism of Rosa Parks.
but thats who we celebrate during pride week

have fun everybody

40 years...my how time flies. And yes, I think it is up there with Rosa Parks. While I've seen estimates of the GLBT population ranging from 5% to 20% in the US (no hard statistics available), that's a very large slice of the population no matter what. So raise a glass to those who participated in Stonewall.

funny thing... every 60 year old New York faggot claims to have busted some cops jaw that night. surprisingly few photos of the actual event give rise to urban legends. One things for sure, NYPD suffered a beat down they didn't forget for a long time.

Who knew it would begin a civil rights movement and participation in a "riot" would become a badge of honor ?

Our community has always been this way. As with the Compton Cafeteria riots, it was the T's that said "no more".

personally i think the glbt community is way more than 5 to 20%, specially if you count those "in the closet" or too scared of repercussions to be open.

*sigh*
