Maryland Ranked 3rd RICHEST State in US

I was watching the news this morning and Maryland (where I live) is ranked the 3rd richest state in the United States and we also have 2 of the richest counties in The United States. Howard County is ranked 8th and Montgomery County is ranked 11th out of every county in the USA!!

I'm pretty sure I'm representing (unfortunatly not literally) the richest state, Connecticut.

That's right, Angela. According to the New York Times:

"HARTFORD, Nov. 29 - The new numbers from the Census Bureau on Tuesday seemed to restore Connecticut's longstanding status as the wealthiest state in the nation: it edged out New Jersey by $53 in median household income for 2003, after falling behind the Garden State the year before by $389."

In 2001, the ranking was as follows:

"The 10 States with the highest per capita incomes in 2001 were Connecticut ($41,930), Massachusetts ($38,845), New Jersey ($38,153), New York ($35,884), Maryland ($34,950), New Hampshire ($33,928), Colorado ($32,957), Minnesota ($32,791), Illinois ($32,755), and California ($32,648). Of these States, per capita incomes in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Maryland have been ranked in the top five States every year since 1991."

As noted, Conn, Mass, NJ, NY, and MD tend to place in the top five for the past 15 years, shifting a little between themselves but ahead of the rest of the country. Why? One reason is that three cities influence these figures tremendously: NYC, DC, and Boston (DC is sometimes listed by itself as one of the top five, usually vieing for the top spot).
