About 10 days ago Maggie Gee asked me if I would write the occasional article for IPOWA (the International Post Operative Women's Association).
I had a look at the site, the aims and ethos, and concluded this was a cause worth supporting, so I said yes.
IPOWA is developing a section on women and trans women with respect to religion, kicking off with Islam.
Spend 5 minutes digging into women under Islam and it's truly fascinating. Add in trans to the mix and it is explosive.
I have written an article about 2 women in Egypt. One (non-trans) who died aged 12 while undergoing female circumcision aka female genital mutilation. And one (trans) cast aside by her family, condemned by her society, oppressed by the leading centre for Islamic studies in Egypt, who simply refused to give in, and who has been taking on these forces for the last 20 years, and striking back.
Various bits of this story appear elsewhere on the Internet, but there is only one place where these diverse pieces are brought together in a single picture. It's exlusive to IPOWA.
If you want to find out more, come over to IPOWA. Check out Trans Women and Religion.
Kindly remember the core ethos is respect.
