S Korea’s first legally approved gender change was in 2002.
In 2006, the Supreme Court ruled that SRS was required for a gender change.
The National Human Rights Commission of S Korea has said the Supreme Court should reconsider, based on cost and fatalities.
A survey placed national income at US$500/month, while SRS costs 150 times this (so about 12.5 years of everything earned.)
Official data re TS does not exist. The Commission ‘assumes’ there are about 4,500 trans people in S Korea, while 300-400 have had SRS.
