The extract (and link) is re the Guardian, a top quality UK newspaper that can usually be relied on. Even in the small extract I've copied below, the writer seems to mix transsexual with transvestite. As it so happens, the 16 year old prostitute (started at 12) in the story lives as male with his family and self-identifies as a homosexual male, but describes how dressing up in female form to go out to work at night makes him feel much more female.
This idea of unclear separation of transvestite from transsexual seems to turn up in Brazil and India as well.
Also, note the going rate here - it's about $3 (US) for oral and $5 for anal, and despite the kid blowing most of his takings on alcohol, he still makes a significant financial contribution to his family.
