Language Question: Pinoy or Pinay?

I've seen both used in reference to transgendered Filipinos. I know Pinay is the feminine form, so I assume it's the preferred form, but I thought I'd ask our Filipina contingent what the preference is. Which is preferred?

pinay is what you call a filipino woman, pinoy is synonymous with filipino people
