I have so been trying to NOT post this.
If the Large Hadron Collider goes wrong on Wednesday we will all
1) instantly disappear into a black hole
2) take about a month/week to disintegrate into the biblical apocalypse.
NB Where is Mandy when you need her for a comment?
But no. This is NOT the Large Hadron Collider.
IT IS THE LARGE HARDON COLLIDER.
Visit http://largehardoncollider.com/ to see what really happens.
The science of large hardons explained! In graphics!!! :whoa:

The worry about the black holes is easy to prove false: we are bombarded every day by cosmic rays whose collisions are typically far more energetic than the LHC. No apocalypse in 4 billion years ...

That is too funny! I'll have to ask my niece the physicist about the large hardon collider!

I'm confused, is it HADRON and not Hard-ON? I clicked Jim's link and saw a redirection link for a Large hadron Collider... I dunno.. Dammit I was hoping to see Large Hard on's!!

1. Flombago is right. The world will not end - again!!!!!
2. Somebody has worked out that the world mis-spells hadrons (the things in the Large Hadron Collider) as hardons. People are trying too look up the large hardons collider. Wherein you get Higgs-Bosom particles. And this explanation of large hardons and black holes.

If you don't make it all the way thru to the end credits, please note that the background dancers stated that they prefer to remain anonymous.

Very enjoyable ... for nerds like myself ... but I bet it doesn't make the top 40 music charts !

Seems we have to wait a while.
"After Wednesday's test, engineers will need to get two beams running in opposite directions around the LHC. They can then carry out collisions by smashing them together.
...
During winter, the LHC will be shut down, allowing equipment to be fine-tuned for collisions at full energy."

A minor quibble about the pic you posted in #5: In the LHC the 2 hadrons collide with equal speed in opposite directions, hence 2 hardons should be shown in the cartoon. Perhaps the artist knew better but was too homophobic to represent it ? :)
