Very low imo, isn't the very word 'Tgirl' a sex industry term ?

Why is the poll relevant ?

How do you define "sex work"? To me, the term refers to prostitution in some form, and as such would be limited to tgirl escorts. In that case, I know a fair number of girls who do not do sex work. Or do you include adult models, actresses, etc? If so, the percentage rises. And are you including past tense as well as present tense? I know girls who used to escort, but no longer do. Actual percentages elude me, however.

you may be thinking of 'shemale'. For forum purposes, tgirl is a perfectly acceptable way to refer to transgendered women.

I haven't voted yet. still going over everyone I know.

Until getting involved specifically in the TS Fetishist community (I do consider porn sex work, and I think it generally is included Ecstatic, FYI) I only knew one other trans woman, and one trans man out of hundreds of trans people that were sex workers. I actually felt like a pariah, and completely isolated within my community of trans folks. No, I knew this dude Morty (FTM) who made a porn called Tranny Fags that some of my friends starred in, but none of them got paid much and it was more about making a trans-masculine porn, than getting paid.

Now, the number of dykes I know that do sex work, the list goes on and on.

Most trans-women that I know are way too freaked out by their bodies to be able to engage with guys who fetishize them.

using ecstatic's broader definition of sex work, I voted 10%. And sadly, that small group are older queens who frankly don't have the option.

The young, attractive t's I know who don't escort have not been able to resist the easy money of an occasional photo shoot. They typically work in beauty salons or restaurants, but when vee man comes calling, it's tough to say no.

See, my friends, are: Artists (professionally), clothing retailers, harvesters (its the west coast big money on the pot farms), paramedics, doctors, electrologists, organizers, musicians, and then you know service industry types hotels, restaurants, cooperative grocery store workers, massage therapists, sex-toy store workers, etc..

But my community of trans people is centered around being queer, and to some extent radical (politically, not like surfers) and kinky, so they are not gonna be hanging around porn message boards staring at cock all day, and "the vee man" aint gonna find them unless he ends up at the next Philly Trans Health conference, or punk show, which who knows maybe he scouts those places, but I kind of doubt it. My whole point is there is a whole world of ladies that y'all aint privy to, and they are really cool people.

I voted "Less than 5%", using the broad definition of 'sex work' (Escorts, nude modeling for porn and fetish sites, film/video work, exotic dancing, etc.).

Not more than three years ago, I could have answered 100%, but in the recent years I have encountered dozens upon dozens of transpeople who are now, once were, or are considering entering the sex industry in some form or another (Primarily in relation to the venues through which I have met them - If you go to a ballfield, you are far more likely to find baseball players/fans, etc.). This influx of new acquaintances has therefore greatly skewed the numbers for me.

There are actually quite a fair number of girls associated with the health services group I belong to, ASIAC (AIDS Services in Asian Communities), who do not engage in sex work and never have. Many of them are counselors who reach out to the younger folks to spread awareness about communicable diseases and the resources available to help them and also communicate to them in their native language because many of them are not native English speakers.

I also know many girls who are escorts or do adult modeling for web sites and some choose to do one or the other or both. And, technically, "tgirl" includes crossdressers, too, so I know a fair number of those who have positions of power in industry (CEOs, CFOs, doctors, lawyers, lead engineers) and have never done porn or escorting.

I don't know any girl in real life who does sex work, it's not the circles I run in. If we include my normal online friends, none really do it. Since I started going to HA again, you could count them but that's vague.

We can also assume that very few TS over 35 do sex work (but they may have in the past) and essentially no late-transitioners do.

So if you're looking at TS between the ages of 18 and 25, then I'm sure there are a fair number, especially if you look world-wide.

The only real-life people I've known who have done sex work are from when I used to be involved in the BDSM community with my ex-fiance. That's not the usual porn or escorting gigs, it's more a lifestyle with some financial opportunities.

Of course, I've seen a good deal of my friends naked, particularly the TS ones because we still take nekkid photos, even if we're not getting paid ^_^

I've been meaning to see that for years... I've seen it at Babeland though, I should get it sometime.

I am a fan of the ftmundressed community on LiveJournal. Even lacking in equipment, they're some of the hottest guys-next-door around. In-shape and furry... yum.

The guys who get the keyhole top surgery, you can't even tell they ever had boobs. Most guys I know have the big scar. Hopefully my ex-fiance will be able to get keyhole when he gets his (I'm pretty sure, he's pretty small).

How about, "What's the percentage of TGirls (and TBoys) that you know who are not bisexual?"

I went to the premiere in NYC at Babeland years back, but I was pissed off at Morty at the time because of tiff we had at the Sex Workers art show around an empty seat that I sat in, so when I spotted him walking towards me and my friend I decided to bail. Plus, like I said, I'm pretty close pals with a couple of the guys in the film and friendly acquaintances with another, so I've just never bothered to watch it.

But yeah, I think alot of the trans guys I know are hot, though we often times end up joking about each others height too much to go anywhere but platonic, I kind of need my guys to be at least 5-10 or its just weird. And I'm always hitting on their girlfriends, but thats another story. ;)

Holy shit Kalina! How long have you been involved in HIV/harm reduction in Philly? I bet we actually know a bunch of the same people, especially if you are familiar with folks from Act UP and Philly FIGHT. You might even have known my girlfriend from back when. Weird.

I prefer guys significantly taller than me and being at least a little taller is important. I'm 5'6" so it's not that difficult but for some reason tranny boys almost seem to be shorter than average for females. My ex-fiance was a mere 5'2". Another FTM boyfriend was an inch shorter than me. I only know one FTM who is like 5'10" whereas I know several women who are 5'8"-5'11". Hmmm...

I'm over 35, I was a late transitioner, and I'm a sex worker for going on 3 years.

Very true. You are one beautiful exception :-)

But you know why guys like to date me even though I'm older? Because I'm NICE. And I have fun doing what I do, and I'm not all about money. And I really get a lot of satisfaction of knowing I've made someone happy and left them with a nice memory.Very true. You've talked about your hospitality to clients on HA. I'm glad you have fun. My friend is also pretty classy too, she's a wonderful, motherly, dominant, Amazon type who stands 5'11" and has large breasts (with a beautiful sunburst tatoo on one). I haven't talked to her (aside from LiveJournal) in a couple years but doing the math, she's over 35 now too.

I was a play party at her house one time and there were a lot of people, over 100 throughout the night passed through those doors. One lady, a close friend of theirs', wore a corset. She was over 40, close to my own mother's age, but as I told my boyfriend ~ my mom doesn't look that good in a corset. I've seen the woman in plain clothes as well and she was nothing special but when she got done up. Well, that's how she had a boy toy 20 years her junior! (who my boyfriend fucked...)

Point is, the industry ages you quickly. I was on the Grooby page for models and was talking about it... you know, for my friend... They do girls who aren't necessarily the model type, right seanchai? I noticed they do Seattle-Portland area in the PNW, which made me happy. But I also started to think... gosh, I'm getting rather old to start doing that sort of thing... After all, I'm no 18yo spring chicken, that was five years ago. ugh.

Escorting though, is different than porn. If this were GG industry, you'd be relegated to "mature" porn since everything is sliding towards 18 now. I've heard guys complain about how other adult men are lusting after 18yo girls and girls that are supposed to look even less than legal and you know they look at 16yos on the street. Why are men obsessed with girls half their age? Isn't a fully-developed adult woman your age much more attractive?

But as with my friend in the corset, I'm sure not all of your clients or men at bars are your age either. My ex-fiance's mother was involved with a guy who was 15 years younger than her too (they met, she was over 40 and he was 23 and they dated for like 5 years). You have Jessica too!

As for the percentages. Studies show between 30 and 50% of TS's are sex workers. My experience is there are two trans communities. The "mainstream" trans community - of which very few are involved in sex work, most are older and many transitioned on the job. And the "I like sex" community - where probably 80-90% are available for a price, at least on occasion. That sounds rather reasonable. My ex-girlfriend even tried a brief stint (as in like a week or two) as a phone sex operator but couldn't deal with it. Other net friends have tried it and dropped it or are contemplating it. It's definitely not for everyone, GG or TS.

I like sex but it doesn't mean I'd want to do it for money with guys I don't even really know. I've been photographed having sex and being videotaped wouldn't be a big leap but the difference is that one is for money, the same as I'd think about sleeping with the cute guy I met at the bar over a random guy I was getting paid to do (by a porn studio or the man himself ~ funny how the one is legal and the other isn't...)

I used to be a member of the LiveJournal community mtf_undressed. I apparently was banned, however, after a couple years of membership for allegedly reposting another member's photos. I IM'ed her (she was on my Yahoo) and showed her a posting I had found of her photos in a thread online. She accused me of posting them. Needless to say, we don't talk anymore. Grrr....

So, you will occasionally see nekkid photos of me crop up online (such as the set I posted a couple days ago here!) but at least not now, not for money.

(Sorry, I'm rambling, I'm stoned).

Yeah like Mandy and Zoe have pointed out, it's all about who you roll with.

I went with 75% who are not in 'the life', though I have some very dear
friends who are on 'the game'.
