Thought about buying a tC, but Longo Toyota had a waiting list for them (not sure if they still do). As of now, I'm driving a Corolla (AE86) and my Celica GTS, and am in the process of importing a right-hand drive Toyota Soarer...known as a Lexus SC430 to us Yanks.

Still might get that tC though.

Does anyone have a hybrid or has a friend with a hybrid? I would like to hear the feedback on the cars. I know that going to total electric motor would not be a great idea during the winter months and for acceleration purposes. I wonder how the acceleration and driving a hybrid during winter months are. I also heard that getting in an accident with a hybrid can be more dangerous (bigger mixture of gasoline and greater potential for an eletric spark). Personally, I am wanting for the technology (miniturizing the electric components for greater truck space) to improve and waiting for more history on hybrid cars (endurance and maintenance issues).

A friend of mine just dropped 40 large on a Highlander hybrid. He's a real smart guy who works in wetlands conservation and helping to restore the wolf population in Yellowstone, but as he described the SUV hybrid to me I had to wonder if this isn't a) a marketing ploy to capture the lucrative environmentally-conscious-yet-wants-to-go-off-road upper middle class consumer and b) in general (all hybrids, not just SUV) a means for the oil/auto industries to extend their hold on the market until they're forced to offer us real change. I mean, come on, ethanol-enriched gas is proven (going back decades) and would immediately reduce the US's dependency on foreign oil and thereby reduce fuel and fuel-related costs.

I just don't see the sense in a hybrid SUV: it's not true all-wheel or 4-wheel drive because the rear wheels are powered solely by the electric motor. Lose all traction in the front and how much power do you have? In the snow? With a 3500-lb trailer? Then there's the safety issues (fire depts around the country have questioned the safety of these cars due to the greater potential for fire and other injuries in a rescue operation). And the friggin' SUV still weighs over two tons, so its max fuel efficiency is 31 mpg. I get 29 mpg on average in my '99 VW Passat wagon, and I got 37 mpg in my '89 Honda Accord sedan. These are not small cars! Just think what we could do in city driving with Smart cars and the like.

There is a battery swap kit for the Toyota hybrid (the little one whatever it's called) that allows you to get 99.9 MPG.

although i like the concept i doubt i would drive one for atleast 20 years because by then it will be perfected but for now i agree they lack power, safety and reliability. but hey we can dream can't we..... "and yay he said unto them...no more gas prices and u can still hit 0-60 in less then 5 with all wheel drive on solar power" <---sounds like a dream.

Because they are pretty cheap. Though I wouldn't buy one no matter how cheap.

i have an 84 honda civic, it might as well be a hybrid as its engine is soooo small. $20 to fill it and i can make that last a month with daily driving. when i bought it for $600 it was beat, every panel on it had dents, the frame was bent in two places and it had no floors or seats.

fast forward to now:
it has all the body fixed and straight, the frame is all spiffy and straight, a crazy bright paintjob that i did myself with guidance from my hubby. he welded in new floors, found me a brand new set of creme leather yukon denali seats with power everything (thier even heated) a newer interior from a nicer version of my car, in charcoal. a new sound system with 2 12" subs 1200watts for each, 2 8" subs 2 6.5"mids and 2 5.25" 2-ways and 3 amps totaling 2500watts of power..... and right now i'm saving up for an in-car computer as i'm a HUGE electronics/computer geek and i do lots of on-site service calls.

he has an 88 jeep yj painted using the same paint and colours as my car but in a different design using a different technique, he is in the auto refinishing biz so he knows how to do all this stuff.

i do however like the scion. i watched a program on tv where they modded one into a rolling dj booth/party sound system. http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/article/two/0,,2076_54396786_154856949,00.html
nice car, can do lots with it and its cheap like dirt.
