Of all all these which is your favorite,

Cowboy Bebop
Lupin The Third
Full Metal Alchemist
Paranoia Agent
One Piece
Case Closed
Trigun
Naruto
Rave Master
Zatch Bell
Inuyasha
Samurai Champloo

Naruto and Cowboy Bebop are tied for me now a days. I have the complete series for each (154 episodes and 1 movie for Naruto and 26 eps and a movie for Cowboy Bebop). I'm also a huge fan of Ranma 1/2.

From your list though it seems you might only have been exposed to anime via Adult Swim and Cartoon Network?

What about Transformers and Thundercats? Or Thunderbirds? Escaflowne? Speed Racer? All of those are anime as well that were on cable TV. There are even more than those.

Oh, also Outlaw Star and the numerous Gundams and Robotech. I shouldnt' forget those. As well as the movies that Cartoon Network used to show. Also, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex. Ugh, I watch to much anime.

The only ones on your list that I don't recommend or haven't given a chance to are One Piece, Zatch bell, and Rave Master.

Oooo, on TV there was also Pokemon, Digimin, and Beyblade as well as Yugioh and Duel Masters. Silly little kids shows.

I've had the full series for a while. I enjoy it and it has a spectacular openeing theme song. I have never finished watchign it though, it didn't quite hold my interest the whole way through.

Way till Naruto gets out of the introductions. Once the missions start the fun never ends.

I use to be a huge watcher of anime, From Ninja Scroll to the classic Akira, but I just find most of it lately to be just plain redundant, though I have watched Naruto and I enjoy that show quite a bit. Im givin some new anime a shot just to see if its any good. Though if you want to enjoy some good anime movies you should check out Steam Boy, Princess Monoke, Spriggan( my favorite anime of all time), and Spirited Away.

I have a couple issues with most American cartoon shows. My biggest of them being that so very very many of those shows do not have a continuing story line. Instead it is just a collection of "fight villain x" or "random comedy a". Unless they are doing a short mini series of 2 or 3 episodes, you hardly ever see reoccuring or even mentioned storylines from the past. I've personally never watched an anime that runs like this, at least not since the 80's.

Also, the cartoon style of American shows leaves much to be desired. Every show is vastly different, which is a good thing, but like comic strips on paper, not all of them are worth looking at. So many American shows use limited movement and background animations for the shows. Everything seems to flow poorly. Yes, you understand what is going on, but like a comic book, if the art isn't worth looking at, despite the story you may still be turned off.

With that said, there are some American shows I do like. Again, not all of them follow a storyline, but not all of them are made to.

Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Venture Brothers, Simpsons, Teen Titans, Justice League (all versions), Kids Next Door, and Fairly Odd Parents.

A lot of those are pure comedy with a little adventure, which I enjoy a lot. You will usually find more adult and clever humor in these supposedly "kids" shows than you would in your late evening sitcoms.

No its just on Hiatus since they were basically showin the two eps a night deal a couple of weeks back, it should be back next weekend. I know what you mean Rose, thats the reason why i enjoy Justice League, the last season had basically a season long plot, even if the eps was about something else they at least planted elements of what the season was goin to be about. Basically Justice League won me over when they showed the superman vs. shazaam fight, simply the best cartoon fight ever.

I love anime... it's a shame my internet sucks, and has sucked for the past 6 months, not l etting me download torrents r even use download programmes/hubs to great effect. But the Anime I've seen are:

Midori no Hibi

Earthian (4 part movie)

Ai no Kusabi (2 part movie)

Fate/Stay Night (still watching)

Gravitation (want to see... damn connection won't let me downlnoad -_-)

Yu-Gi-Oh!

Pokemon

Digimon Frontier (half-watched, til the times got all messed up on spanish TV)

Loads of others that I've completely forgotten -_- I saw some episodes of One Piece, that was freakishly weird, but funny lol

Oh yeah, I watched a few Anime movies from the makers of Spirited Away, on Film Four a while back:

Kiki's Delivery Service

Princess Mononoke

Castle in the Sky: Laputa (that is La Puta in spanish... not fond of that name, they kinda screwed up there unless it was intentional :p)

LMAO! oh... I watched a porn movie of Sailor Moon/Dragon Ball Z, where this dragon ball goes up one of their vaginas and makes her grow a cock... but the animation and voice over is really, really bad...

there is one where a shemale makes an appearance
but nothing really serious.

i get to see a lot japanimation DVDs from my Netflix

I was referring to the Justice League cartoon that Mustard Plug had mentioned, but since you were bringing back the thread to which the last post (Mustard Plug's) was 11 months ago, we may never hear the answer to that.

Recently DC ran an enjoyable miniseries featuring Supes and Cap'n Marvel which did a better job than I'd seen before of distinguishing between their powers without laying overt claim to who was more powerful.

Superman of course has an inherent weakness to magic, whereas Marvel is powered by magic (but then I think that most stories involving magic and Superman grossly misrepresent magic as "the ability to do anything you want" and make out that Superman is "helpless as a babe" before any kind of magic, both of which are patently absurd; more in keeping with magic (as so well shown in the Vertigo titles like Hellblazer) would be the realization that magic is simply applying one's will to the universe according to the laws of chaos and order, and that while Superman has no power over magic, it doesn't necessarily have power over him, and taken to its extreme we get Green Lantern, who is "magical" in applying his will but whose magical talisman is the most advanced bit of technology in the known universe--but I digress).

OTOH, Marvel was totally fascinated ("Shazam!") by Superman's "natural" powers of heat vision, x-ray vision, superhearing, and more. So the two were shown to be rather equally matched, but quite distinct.

and Thor fought Shazam (aka Captain Marvel) and
beat Shazam.
As it should be, a god vs. a mortal with some of the powers of some gods.

And I've totally exceeded my geek quota for the day.

Used to watch a lot of anime a couple of years ago. Infact I own some boxsets that aren't even retailed (and probably never will). But as of recently I've fallen out of the loop unless Miyazaki, Kon or such a director/witer comes up with something new.

hmmm, as often as i try to follow the Justice League toon series
i've yet to catch that episode of Superman/Shazam conflict.
so far i've heard Supey refer to being " ineffective to magic"
when the League was trying to investigate why Solomon Grudy's
was aiding the mysterious mystic Doctor Fate.
( suprisingly Solomon Grudy actually DIED in the end )
i wonder if this is one of the Justice League Unlimited episodes
that i've missed and yet to be released on DVD ?
i'll keep an eye out.

i also thought it would be more cool if Green Lantern's Ring of
Power was more cosmic-powered than mystical oriented
the Captain Mar-vel label still throws me off since i tend
to keep more in tune with the Marvel Comic's own Captain Marvel
who was a Kree warrior and power-enhanced by the cosmic
wrist bands he wore.
" Shazam" as labelled by the DC version always
worked better for me.
Needless to say, Ecstatic, you're a great deal
more knowledgeable and up to snuff about Shazam than i am.

Speaking of the Justice League series, like SAMURAI JACK,

A ton more fun (and serious) than the Hanna Barbara-Superfriends.

Well, I never watch the cartoons on TV (though I did catch a couple of Teen Titans 'toons a few months back when I was channel surfing), so I wouldn't know about the distinctions between the 'toons and the comics. Solomon Grundy has died multiple times; he just keeps coming back. He's a failed plant elemental, a corruption of Swamp Thing as it were. (Swamp Thing was a great character in the past, under Alan Moore and other writers in the Vertigo Swamp Thing title, but the revised version of late sucks, and they ruined the very intriguing character of his daughter. Bleh.)

i also thought it would be more cool if Green Lantern's Ring of
Power was more cosmic-powered than mystical oriented
Alan Scott's (the original 1940s Green Lantern) ring is mystical in nature and only loosely connected (if at all--depends on the spin they give his story) to the Guardians of the Universe. He's not a member of the Green Lantern Corps. Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner and the rest are all GL Corps members and their rings are cosmic powered by the central power battery on Oa. But the thing about the Guardians is that their technology is so advanced, it might as well be magic; the realms really overlap at that level.

Anyway, my point is that few writers of comics have any real sense of magic. Zatanna: pronounce words backwards and do anything you want. Right. Dr Fate: more cosmic being than actual magic; the Lords of Chaos and Order have more in common with the Guardians or various gods (New Gods, Olympians, etc.) than they do with magical entities. Dr Strange: depends on the writer; sometimes he's well handled and the focus is on knowledge, but other times he's just another pull-a-potion-out-of-your-talisman gimmick. For intelligent treatment of magic, see Hellblazer.

the Captain Mar-vel label still throws me off since i tend
to keep more in tune with the Marvel Comic's own Captain Marvel
who was a Kree warrior and power-enhanced by the cosmic
wrist bands he wore.

Not really; I've never really followed the character, whether back in the Fawcett days or after DC acquired him. Too silly by far, unless well handled as in the miniseries I mentioned. And DC has never quite figured out what to do with him. Superman is the most powerful superhero (except when they write J'onn J'onzz as more powerful, or emphasize magic and give it to Dr Fate, etc.), but Captain Marvel is "the world's mightiest mortal" and that makes him Superman's rival for the title.

Superman was the first superhero, but in the 1940s Marvel was more popular (just as Spider-Man and the X-Men are more popular today). In any event, the Fawcett Captain Marvel predates the Marvel Comics Captain Marvel by decades; Billy Batson and his alter-ego were introduced in 1940, ruled the 1940s, but were cancelled in 1953 when Fawcett pulled out of the superhero biz (as did most publishers, DC alone staying active with the core titles of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman before reviving the genre in the late 50s with Showcase introducing Silver Age versions of the Flash, Green Lantern, the Atom, etc.).

Then in the 1960s, with Captain Marvel far in the past, Marvel Comics introduced its Kree warrior Mar-vel (the spelling a partial attempt to avoid litigation). The original was mostly known by reference on the Gomer Pyle TV show ("Shazam!"). Then DC licensed the character in 1973, and litigation between Marvel and DC went into force, leading DC to publish the comic with the title Shazam. But the character has never taken Shazam as his name; he's always been Captain Marvel (or the Big Red Cheese, lol). And Marvel's character's name is "really" Mar-Vel, not Marvel. Thus, the two companies came to a settlement. DC acquired full rights to Captain Marvel and other Fawcett heroes in 1980.

it was Fist of the North Star and Vampire Hunter D that
really got me started and continuing on japanimation, though
suprisingly i just couldn't get into the new Fist-North Star series
nor the 2nd Vampire Hunter D film: BLOODLUST.

Fist, Hunter D, Crying Freeman, 8-Man After, Robotech, BattleAngel
etc. all originated from Streamline Pictures before
they folded and sold the rights to another studio producer.

i always hope that the movie producers would one
day bring Vampire Hunter D into a live action film
but i wonder how many viewers would be familar with him.
i think they could relate better with a 2nd Van Helsing (Hugh jackman)
than Hunter D because they've seen the first.

i still like the the thought of a green light try at Hunter D though.
i did like Macrosse and Robotech as well.

I'm not a huge anime fan, but I've seen a few and liked them so far:

Ninja Scroll
Patlabor
Ghost In The Shell
Princess Mononoke

I've tried to watch a few other things and I find them just stupid. Dragonball Z is... well I have no idea what the hell goes on there. Pokemon, Naruto, same thing. Boring.

Ghost In The Shell appealed to me for several reasons. It really reminded me of Blade Runner, for one thing. Also, the technology and the world were really interesting.

I don't get the kiddie anime stuff, and some of the more mature anime series have bizarre storylines that confuse me.

So, gentle readers, here's a question:

If you were going to try and get someone interested in watching anime, what would you start them out with, and WHY? Try to be coherent; anything like "Vampire Hunter D because ZOMG!!1!!111!!!!! it's t3h kewlest and they like hunt vampires and stuff and it ROCKS!" doesn't really help much :P

I'm not sure how I missed this topic to the first time it was around. I don't watch as much anime as I used to but umong my favorites:
Inuyasha
Cowboy Bebop
Ninja Scroll
Witch Hunter Robin
Wolf's Rain (not all of it, I kept missing episodes)
...I'm sure I'm missing some good ones.

I like ones that have well drawn characters rather than just 2 dots for the eyes (I think there's a few character in Dragonball where it look like they got lazy and gave them dots for eyes). And I dislike anime where it take 20 minutes for a character to pull off one attack, which ends up missing anyway.

I used to like Inuyasha for the storyline and the characters but I think they dragged out a little too long. Tha artwork is not bad, but Cowboy Bebop is superior to it. Cowboy Bebop didn't run too long for me to lose interest, but I miss the mythical aspects I got with Inu.

with so many come -to -life movies being made nowdays
i'm very much hoping Vampire Hunter D eventually is made
into a live action film because i think

i think D" the vampire hunter is more unique than
Hugh Jackman's Van Helsing character
( to which i liked a lot and was anxiously hoping
for the sequel ) ... i just loved D's annoying -talking hand
as well as D's fights against other vampires, werewolves,
witches, ghouls, snake-women, mutants Gog-beasts and
powerful lord vampires.

i loved the 1st Vampire Hunter D, but didn't care for the
2nd one at all ( Bloodlust ) I thought it was more geared
to " artwork " than pure " action ".

Does anyone know if there was a second season of Samurai Champloo?

I loved that series..

Especially considering the soundtrack was done by the japanese hip hop producer Nujabes.

The theme song was sooooo killer.

The entire season was short as hell only 26 epsiodes but epsiodes 18-26 were meant to be the second season.

Everyone watches a little anime these days.

Here's my "acquired" anime collection:

* .hack//SIGN [1-28] - quite fun, some people play too many video games :-P
* Battle Royale
* Bleach [1-75 + 2xOVA]
* Blood+ [1-13] - Awesome, also watch the movie
* Cowboy Bebop [1-26 + Movie] - really fun, compare to Fox's "Firefly"
* FLCL [1-6] - Bizarre, full of in-jokes and weirdness
* Escaflowne [1-26] - Fantasy-oriented, cute bishi.
* Full Metal Alchemist [1-51]
* Full Metal Panic [1-24]
* Ghost in the Shell [Movie only, my ex-gf had both series] - Very confusing and repetitive... good action though
* Gravitation - Yaoi love story between teenage wannabe rocker and his idol, hot rejection.
* Gunslinger Girl - The government adopts orphans and modifies them and trains them to be assassins. Loli-potential ^-^
* Hellsing [original anime + OVA 1] - Beats "Blade". The OVA is awesome, darker and more realistic (and closer to the manga if you have read that).
* Hikaru no Go [1-75]
* I, My, Me! Strawberry Eggs - Male teacher passes himself off as a woman to work in an all-girls' school, occasionally endearing as he starts understanding women better
* Inuyasha [1-128 + 2 movies] - Extremely long, repetive, hit on Adult Swim though
* Jungle wa Itsumo Hale nochi Guu - More bizarre weirdness and very light-hearted. Guu likes to eat things and people...
* Loveless - kind of a weird yaoi, the older character is supposed to be the uke (bottom). Would have made a better video game than anime. You have to read the manga because the anime leaves you hanging.
* Metropolis
* Midori no Hibi - Weird comedy about a girl who has a crush on this guy and then wakes up attached to his right hand...
* Naruto [1-175 + movie] - Not actually that bad, even though it targets the Pokemon fan base...
* Serial Experiments: Lain - DELICIOUS! Bizarre and deep though. Classic. Beats "The Matrix" ^-^
* Sukisyo - My favorite yaoi, so cute and the boys look like girls. No sex but some very hot scenes. Gets angsty and dark towards the end.
* Yami no Matsuei - Another yaoi, this time about the underworld.

* Sensitive Pornograph - explicit yaoi porn. the bunny part is the best. uncensored in us release!

I forgot, Jessica also likes (and I sometimes watch with her)

Big O
Outlaw Star
Cowboy BeBop

My favorites - Strawberry Egg and the one we just finished Girl Meets Girl. That one is sooo sweet - I told Jessica her parents need to watch it and they totally understand her.

Like that'll ever happen...

Sigh - giggle,
TS Jamie :-)

I saw Big O via Adult Swim, we caught most of the episodes, including the (very weird) ending ones. I haven't seen it completely start-to-finish, but I would like to.

Lot's of good ones listed. I love anime, although I'm still a relative noob on them. I've only seen Armitage, Akira, Princess Mononoke, and Ghost In A Shell. I'm definitely going to be looking for the others that have been brought up here. I must say, I hate the recent rash (yes, I said rash) of kiddie anime as of late. Have you seen what they've done to the transformers, looney tunes and x-men? It's a crime!

In case you like anime movies with a dash of porn thrown in, you may want to check out:

Bible Black
Parade Parade

Both have transgendered themes in mind. Bible Black is a bit more graphic though. You can find clips on Rude.com for references.
