I had thought you could only do this with SRS, but you might be able to without? I am not sure.

I think it depends where you live, or if your lucky enough to get a compasionate clerk at the BMV, In my state (Indiana) they will do it after a legal name change with proof of documentation..and of course after SRS

in CA all i had to do is fill a sex change form and then i had my ex (he is a DR) write a letter stating that i was in in transition so with that and the court doc about the name change it worked for me!!!!!!!!

ask if there is any form you might be able to fill out and see if maybe you can get a DR to sigh it for ya

good luck

I know that this place provides help with legal name change, etc. You may want to send them an email, and ask them for details. Actually, I need to get over there to do that myself.

Anyone know how much it costs to have a name change? What is the process, is it just like a form, someone stamps it, and boom new name? Or do you have to like tell someone why you are changing it, etc?

I am from Texas first of all. Every state of course is different. What I did was I went to the local library and I got one of my state books(here it was in the reference room where the law and code books for your state is. One of the books was an index, i looked up name change. It told me the book and book number cause there are quite a few. I never imagined there were so many laws.)anyhoo.....It said I needed a document called a petiton for change of name adult. there are different ones for different type of name changes(mostly for children though)So I just asked the guy working at the desk if he knew where I could get one of those documents at? And suprisingly he got it off of a legal website that he is apparently familiar with. I mean, he does work at a library right? so yeah just like that I got it. And the next step was to file it with the county court. I went to court and talked to the judge, which was embarassing cause its in front of everyone and they call u out by ur name. I told her I was in transition yada yada which as if by that point it wasn't obvious already...I changed my first and middle(it's the same cost here for both) which ran me $350.00 with court costs and filing fees.. It's more I think if u change ur full name plus you can't have any felony convictions. When I took my name change papers to the DMV(which it goes through the legal system automatically) But I went anyways cause I wanted to make sure it went through asap. When I went there the lady just changed my sex too. Now my previous drivers license of couse had my boys name on it. But I'm far in transition as is my picture. But when I got it in the mail it said f on it. She never asked me anything like that when I went there. Maybe I lucked out. I dunno. I know in Texas u have to have an orchi or srs papers to get it changed. But as far as the name part which was all intended on doing to start with thats what I did. Screw the attorney I got legally blonde with it. I hope this helps.

http://www.gaycenter.org/program_folders/gipI just started following up on this today. The only way that the LGBT Center can be of help with this is if you live in NYC. The first Mon night of every month you can go there and sign up. (That place is pretty lame when it comes to helping the transgender community anyway. I think that they get most if their donations from rich gay men and lesbians, and we're low priority to them. I've told them that, but they swear it's not true. Bullshit!) Anyway, they refered me to Lambda Legal services. Hopefully this will help alot more.

I'm in AZ but I still have my Cali license with the F on it. When you switch over they take whatever the gender is on your out of state license. However, there is a way in AZ to do it as well. It is a bit more invasive. I can walk you through it. Just mail me at:

Actually a friend of mine (French citizen) told me yesterday that she got her 1st name changed and her gender changed from M to F.

I'm really happy for her!

It needed a complicated procedure in court but without SRS we got her gender legally changed and should soon get a revised driver lic/ID card/passport.
(won't detail here, but if anybody want the gory details ask me)
