Pooh is male: sort of. His proper name is Edward Bear, and in the original books (Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner), A.A. Milne always uses the masculine pronoun /he/ when referring to Pooh. However, things are not quite so clear when Pooh is introduced on the first page of the first book Winnie-the-Pooh:

When I first heard his name, I said, just as you are going to say, "But I thought he was a boy?"

"So did I," said Christopher Robin.

"Then you can't call him Winnie?"

"I don't."

"But you said---"

"He's Winnie-ther-Pooh. Don't you know what 'ther' means?"

"Ah, yes, now I do," I said quickly; and I hope you do too, because it's all the explanation you are going to get.

So....I never thought of this before, and it's a fallacy to impose present day cultural precepts on a past culture (that is, on Edwardian England), but the neutal pronoun /ther/ definitely injects a different dimension to the mix. Is Milne subtlely disrupting socially constructed gender bias in a kid's book way back in 1926? Shocking! Perhaps Pooh really is transgendered (which is how I read your use of 'gay' Juliana, given the Filipino usage of that term).

Dr. B's Blog (http://joe.english.purdue.edu/blog/node/59) presents this argument:

"Now, this is obviously Milne's way of introducing children to the concept of gender as a social construction. While both the reader above and Christopher Robin assumed that Winnie was a boy because she was gendered male, it is obvious that Winnie is indeed a biological girl. The determiner ther in this case is actually a newly constructed gender neutral/bending pronoun. I am still doing instensive linguistic study on that one."

(For further discussion of /ther/ relative to Pooh's name, see http://www.specgram.com/CXLVIII.4/04.buendia.pooh.html.)

I like the idea that Winnie-the-Pooh is a tranny bear! But that is probably as much a misreading as the simplistic assumption that he's male. More likely, Milne is indicating that gender is fluid and a social construct, and in a child's mind can morph from male to female.

As for the red top: note that this attire was added by Disney decades after the Pooh books were published. In the original storyline, and the original line drawings and watercolors by illustrator Ernest H. Shepard, Pooh wears no clothes at all.

Piglet's clearly a bottom, but everyone else is too big for him :)

Winnie is definitely gay. I saw him leaving Piglet's house one night, really late. I took a picture to prove it! Piglet told me that him and Winnie was wrestling at first, then he turned around and tried to penetrate him, using honey for lube. Piglet uses only KY and got mad, and put him out.

You know Miss Pooh-pooh loves to invite everybody over to hang out. One day me and the girls were over having tea, when he told us about him and Tiger. He says that they have been involved for over 5 years and they took pics the other day at Olan Mills.....

So what does it mean if cartoon character does wear pants? Does it mean they have something to hide? Like an extra long wang?
Now, Christopher Robin- he is clearly gay.
