While hip hop in america choke on its vomit of comercialism and love with its self and what car you drive how many "bitches" roll with you .Hip hop is braking ground outside of america.First Cuba few cd's but the sound is new the mix of cuban son and african roots with hip hop about black pride and fighting injustice. Also hip hop from brazil is some of the best stuff u heard in your life. The sound of samba and black rio with beats.Check out hip hop from mexico and i'm not talking about west coast chicano.I'm talking home grown just like weed the good stuff. And also france has the second largest hip hop scene outside america MC Soleer is the best from france. So what if u don't speak spanish or french or portagues with all the garbage in american hip hop just open your mind to were hip hop is change things. If u like a mix tape or names of groups I will do it for free I'm a Dj and love opening people to new music bye
While their cd is a couple months old, Im really into system of a down's newest album Mesmorize, and can not wait for their follow up album Hypnotize.

I've been listening to a lot of Prince's older stuff recently (Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain, Parade).
My music mode changes frequently. Earlier this week I was listening to Miles Davis, then some old Snoop Dogg, then Madonna's first three albums, and now Prince. I have no idea what I'll be listening to next.

Good call on whoever said "Transatlanticism". Haven't listened to it in a good while but great stuff. Other than that I just got my copy of Prince "1999" in the mail and ordered Leo Kottke/Mike Gordon "Sixty Six Steps" and The Dresden Dolls album. The 2nd album was a toss up between either what I picked, Funkadelic "Maggot Brain", or The Roots "Things Fall Apart". Get them all eventually plus more. Always love new suggestions.

Angela, if you haven't already, make sure you pick up Funkadelic's "Free Your Mind, and your Ass Will Follow", that album has been a previous obsession of mine many times in the past, it's a very important album to own.

I currently own "Mothership Connection" and "One Nation Under a Groove". Two albums that I can never become seperated from. Been needing some new P-Funk for a good while. "Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow" is my quote on TGPixel, lol. I was just listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers "Freaky Styley" for the first time in a long time last week and noticed something I hadn't before, that George Clinton himself produced the album. Great stuff as well.

Yea the "Free Your Mind,," album came out i think 1969, so it preceeds even the "Maggot brain" album, but the album is pure genious. It's also a very very influential album. I've never really been a RHCP fan, however i do think that thier guitarist is a pretty good song writer on his own.

Miles Davis deserves a lot of credit for jazz-rock fusion with Bitches Brew, which opened the way for Weather Report, Chick Corea and Return to Forever, and many others, but jazz played an important if subtle role earlier: Frank Zappa and MOI as mentioned introduced both jazz and classical elements (especially choral arrangements), Donovan fused jazz, rock and folk in from late '65 through '67 on Sunshine Superman and Mellow Yellow albums, and Al Kooper broke loose first by driving Dylan home with his intense organ playing (Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde), the Blues Project, and the original Blood, Sweat and Tears. Straight ahead jazz had become too cerebral for pop music when rock emerged in the mid-50s, but it had a powerful influence on the development of rock in the 60s. Glad to see there are a lot of jazz fans here!
I also love a lot of rock, folk, and singer/songwriter material; some of the best music being made today--in many different genres--is happening under the radar and off MTV. If you tune in, there are some very amazing people working today in many areas. No way to keep abreast of all of it, but I try my best!

I have been listening to Sean Paul's The Trinity album for a week now. He has at least 6 hits. On the album label, they say the hits are: "We Be Burning", "Ever Blazin", "Temperature", and "Breakout". I also like: "Head in the Zone", "Eye deh a mi knee", "Give it up to me", "I'll take you there", "Connection" with Nina Sky, "Straight Up", and "All on me". "Straight Up" and "Head in the Zone", I think, will also be hits. You can not go wrong with this CD.

I like "Mirror Man" better. I agree w/ Ecstatic about the Stones. Some Girls is the last solid album, and the stuff w/ Brian is generally my favorite. Mick Taylor was great too. Ron Wood's talented, but he's a yes-man. Did anyone in the Stones date Amanda Lear? I know she hung out w/ Dali a bit. The world's most famous tranny-chaser? Salvador Dali! :)

,,ok, im going to have to butt heads with the both of you on the Stones topic. I think that that band peaked between those years of 78-81, i think side 2 of Tattoo You is like the greatest. I've never really been a stones fan until i really started exploring those 3 albums. The 60's-mid 70's stuff never really did anything for me, but i have to admit the song Gimmie Shelter is an incredible song but nothing compares to that moment when the sax solo comes in at the end of "waiting on a friend" and slowly drowns itself in reverb.
But i have this idea on how to re-create the guitar sound on Safe as Milk (ala Big Black Baby Shoes), i am going to A/B my 50 watt Hi-Watt with a 100watt Fender Twin reverb, but use a DD-3 delay pedal as the A/B and have a slight slap delay between the two amps to pan them out, and have a few tweeters installed in the cabinet for the Hi-Watt, man, it's going to work, im almost positive, its very similair to the set up that Steve Albini uses. This is gonna be big!

Hing, for me it may well be partly a matter of being there: I started listening to the Stones in 1964 and they were a substantial part of my emerging musical tastes and social awareness (though less so than The Beatles, Donovan, Dylan, and others). But I also loved Jones' contributions to the band, the soul and musical invention he brought in. Many of course think of Mick as the leader, with Keith alongside, but in the beginning it was Brian's band, until the other two moved to the front. Many of my favorite songs are from that period, and I think that even today they play more songs from the six years between '64 and '70 than from any other six-year period.
But I agree that they hit a second peak between '78 and '81, which they've never quite equalled since. What do you think of their new album?
Your ideas about recreating the guitar effects on Safe as Milk sound fascinating. Good luck with that! I have my hands full just noodling on a six-string acoustic from time to time. :?

Hey RockerNyc, good call on Iggy and the Stooges as "Fun House" is right up there with my all time favorite albums.
George Thorogood, it gives me bad memories as a little kid, and my stepdad who was building the basement of our house into an apartment for my grandmother who we decided to move in because she couldn't live on her own anymore, would make us help him during that time, and me and my brother hated it because it was construction work and we wanted to play with our friends,, and he would listen to nothing but George Thorogood during that time. Everytime i hear Bad to the Bone i can't stop remembering about how much that sucked having to fetch hammers, hold up peices of wood, hold tape measures, etc,

Many of my favorite songs are from that period, and I think that even today they play more songs from the six years between '64 and '70 than from any other six-year period. Brian added all the signature elements to all those early songs; recorder, sitar, etc. Without him, the Stones had to rework themselves into a raunchy blues band. Smart move to recruit Mick Taylor, who had established his talent with John Mayell's BB's. But as far as rock bands playing blues, they had ALOT of competion; Yardbirds, Cream, etc. Compared to those musicians, they were nothing very special
Brian was actually fired from the band before he died, his girlfriends abandoned him for Jagger and Richards, and the Stones almost acted like he was never there. Other than their early music being good and original, I don't like the Stones, and in particular Jagger. The poor choices they made at Altamont are a perfect example of why; hiring the Hells Angels as security was stupid enough. They were aware of what had been going on that day, but they still performed and took their sweet time to do so. To me, Gimmie Shelter is essentially a snuff movie. Given their dabblings into the occult, and assocciations w/ satanists, I wouldn't put anything past them.
And I still maintain that their highwater mark w/ Ron Wood is Black and Blue. Some Girls was decent too, but also proved that they would jump on the disco bandwagon to insure record sales and airplay. To me, the song Harlem Shuffle was the last straw: boring, cutsie garbage. At this point, I think they just need to hang it up. All the ringers they hire to compose their material and produce their albums will never make them "cool". Who wants to watch guys old enough to be great-grandparents get all self-indulgent and play "rock". I mean, Richards looks like he may go any minute. Give me Missy Elliott and Kool Keith any day. At least they're talented, and not has-beens.

Hey Arianna,
You have some good points about those guys, but i think at least for me, part of the charm of that era of the band (78-81) was the fact that they did jump on the disco wagon, but couldn't really pull it off so well, and as a result those records have that apeal to me.
and as for "Harlem Shuffle", yea, that was terrible, haahah, that was funny, the last straw.
but like i said, im not a stones fan at all really, never have been,i never really liked thier music, but still those 3 albums to me stand out

Arianna, it's interesting how many key and founding members of bands fall out of favor this way. One name springs to mind immediately, Marty Balin of the Jefferson Airplane (who were one of the best rock bands ever for the period between Surrealistic Pillow and Volunteers, but who slid horribly afterwards; Bark was OK, and Blows Against the Empire a great album, but after that, nothing much). I agree, the Yardbirds and Cream were better bands. Of course, it wasn't all about being dissed by Mick and Keef; Brian was extremely reticient to share his music and rarely brought his compositions to the band to perform, and as a result Mick and Keef were able to assert themselves as writers as well as front men. Interesting that his one-time girlfriend and mother of his son Julian later married Donovan.
As for Missy Elliott, I don't know her work well but I have been impressed by what I've heard. Kool Keith I don't know at all. I try to keep up with the music scene, but there's so much out there that it's nigh on impossible. With a few exceptions, the rap and hiphop scenes do nothing for me; guess I'm just an old foggey when it comes to such things (but I do like Erykah Badu, Aaliyah and some others I've heard). Any recommendations?

Any recommendations? If you like Zappa, you just may like Kool Keith. Very irreverant and talented. I got into him some time ago when he fronted Ultramagnetic, but he's released tons of stuff since then. As for hip hop, off the top of my head: Biz Markie, KRS One (Boogie Down Productions), Del the Funky Homosapien, Onyx, Chino XL, Tim Dog, RX, Slick Rick, Doug E Fresh, Cru, Black Sheep, Red Indian, Jedi Mind Tricks, etc. I started listening to rap back in the days of Grand Master Flash, Whodini, etc on the old WKTU and WBLS. Paco was my man. :) I tend to be old skool and east coast minded. Beyond hip hop, I think that DJ's and tape masters are the new pioneers: DJ Shadow, DJ Quebert, DJ Spooky, Kid 606, and the mighty STEINSKI, to name just a few.

Wow Ecstatic, you just brought up a name i haven't thought about in a while, Marty Balin! His solo song "Hearts" is one of those songs you'd hear while your walking around in a department store over the P.A. system, but that song is pretty much word for word about my ex girlfriend from my perspective! Which is why i love that song.

Wow, I guess I am out of the loop on this! I do remember Grand Master Flash and Whodini, and I've heard of Jedi Mind Tricks, but that's it. I'll start by looking up Kool Keith. He sounds interesting. Thanks for the suggestions.

Balin's influence on Surrealistic Pillow, Crown of Creation, Volunteers, Bless It's Pointed Little Head, and After Bathing at Baxters (which I think is one of the 10 greatest rock albums ever recorded), was amazing, but the clashing between him on the one hand and Grace Slick and Paul Kantner on the other split the band, and after he departed in 1970 and Paul and Grace took over the band (similar to Mick and Keef taking over the Stones from Brian), something went missing. Bark I think was the Airplane's last good album, and I've never really gotten into Starship (other than the classic Blows Against the Empire). Of course Marty came back in '74 and moved in and out of the band since, producing many big hits like "Miracles" but none of these are a patch on the classic 60s work.

Pulled this from allmovie.com...
"Scratch is a documentary that examines the role of the DJ in hip-hop music, from the pioneering work of old school hip-hop artists like Afrika Bambaata and Jazzy Jay to contemporary masters like noted trip-hop musician DJ Shadow and award-winning turntablist group Invisibl Skratch Piklz. The film also explores how DJs turned the turntable into a musical instrument, the increasingly elaborate techniques involved in "scratching" (manipulating vinyl discs, turntables, and tone arms to produce different sonic effects), and how different turntablists dig up the rare and elusive LPs from which they draw the samples that they craft into new songs."

Yea, that song Miracles is one amazing song, it's one of those songs that i used to hear as a kid, when i would be taking a family trip to Maine to visit my grandmother, a 6 hr drive, and i'd fall asleep in the back seat, and after a knap, i'd wake up all confused, and everything is dark and quiet, and all one can hear is the hum of the engine, and Miracles playing softly on the radio. It's the type of song that after halfway through the song it just creeps up on you and suddenly your aware that the song has been playing, but you don't know for how long because its sort of this monotone anti-climactic song with no real changes or verse/chorus pop structure, it has a more droney, sleepy quality to it, very mellow which makes the 3-4 minutes song seem like it's a half an hour long.

Oh yes indeed. Ella is cut from different cloth, being a jazz singer and probably the greatest scat singer of all time, but definitely one of the queens. And I should have mentioned Nina and Etta, both of whom were strongly influenced by Billie though also by others and both of whom created their own unique sound. Etta is one of the greatest blues singers ever, and Nina is every bit as great a pianist and writer as she is a singer.

Good. I love Billie Holiday too. :D
Me I'm just soaking up Shakira's "Fijacion Oral V1" in huge doses just now....I bought it a while ago but didn't really listen properly but now it's well under my skin.....Damn that woman is soooo talented....She does it all, she really does. I knew she was good from her earlier stuff but this has a depth and maturity in every aspect, from the writing to the performance to the arrangements and production that is, frankly, awe-inspiring. She's gone to a whole new level with this. Major, major, major talent.
Sorry, I've got it on LOUD just now and she just launched into "Dia Especial," and I am solid gone, babe. Normal service will be resumed.......

I'm jealous-- Oral Fixation V2 won't be released here till 27 Feb-- my copy is pre-ordered.
That news that you do belly-dancing cheered me up no end tho'
Another great album I'm listening to now is Alejandro Sanz "No Es Lo Mismo"-- I love his voice and the way he sings.
KT Tunstall "Eye to the Telescope" arrived in yesterday's post, very very good, not had a chance to really get into it yet though.....
And of course Mylene Pires, "Mylene"-- it's just brilliant.
Karen Matheson, "Down River"
Oh yeah, and Johnny Winter, "Lone Star Shootout"-- over 30 years old and still amazing.
I have to say it's unusual for my ear to be really taken by mainstream English-language stuff just now-- I think this is a very poor era for that music, though there are still occasional gems and of course there are old standards, piles of them, that are great. Just don't hear many new acts that excite me.

Ain't that the truth! And considering she's 60 years old--yes, 60! Born in 1945, and still looking good. I saw her perform about 8 years back with the Jazz Passengers, doing a blend of caberet, jazz standards and Blondie songs, and really taking her voice to new places.

In addition to the amazing artist Genesys-Daze who Moni's promoting (you've GOT to hear this girl!), I got turned on to two amazing Thai artists in the past few days: Sek Loso (amazing guitarist, singer, rock-and-roll/ballad type of thing) and Tata Young. A Thai tgirl friend of mine here in the states tells me that she doesn't much care for Loso (too old school--but then I'm old, lol), but she raves about Tata, especially the cd I Believe and song Sexy, Naughty, Bitchy. Mandy, I love Fox Confessor! Great album. I haven't heard the latest Vashti Bunyan. It's amazing that the ultimate hippy lady of 1969 should resurface nearly 40 years later and start releasing new music! Have you heard her classic--and only 'early period'--album, Just Another Diamond Day? Beautiful.
Other recent purchases:
Ellen McIlwaine: Mystic Bridge (this lady can play the guitar!)
A Fine Frenzy: One Cell in the Sea
Michael Hedges: Beyond Boundaries (and so can this guy!)
Dolores O'Riordan: Are You Listening?
Carrie Newcomer: Betty's Diner
