Michael Magidson was found guilty of second-degree murder in a Hayward, California, courtroom on Monday.
HAYWARD, California (AP) -- Two men who had sex with a transgender teen and then discovered she was biologically male were convicted Monday of her murder but cleared of hate crimes.

Did anyone catch the Today show interview with Gwen's mother and lawyer? Nicely balanced, positive, thoughtful, not at all sensational: they got this one right. Gwen's mother said she was satisfied with the second degree murder conviction but not with the omission of a hate crime conviction which would have added four years to the sentences and, more importantly, emphasized the true nature of the crime. She (Gwen's mom) has been speaking in public schools and elsewhere raising awareness. The backstory case review also stated that, while the sentence is 15 to life, it is improbable that the convicted killers will get released early and will likely serve the full term.

I wrote a paper for a Civil Rights/Civil Liberties class in college, about transgender discrimination. I remember briefly touching on Gwen's case, but being dramatically touched by what I read.

That is a slap on the hand they will probably be in jail for like 50 years and let go.I think they should GET THE DEATH PENALTY FOR THE HATE CRIME!!!!!!

Thats horrible. why would someone do that? I don't care who or what the person is there is no justification for killing them. I would love to take a 2x4 and smash a white supremacist's head in but i dont because its wrong. I understand about being lied to for instance if my boyfriend or girlfriend had told they slept with someone I would be pissed but I wouldn't kill them I would probably just leave. why couldn't those men just leave.
